A solo journaling game · one traveller · one deck of cards · one notebook

The Quiet Between Stars

You fly alone. At the end of every watch you open the ship's log and write down what happened. The cards tell you what was out there. You decide how it is told.

You will also need a standard deck of playing cards, something to write in, and half an hour of quiet.

1 player

No game master, no group, no schedule. Play a single watch in half an hour or keep one log going for months.

54 cards

An ordinary deck drives everything. Suit says what kind of thing you met, rank picks the line.

350+ prompts

More than thirty tables: places, strangers, derelicts, troubles, and questions only your pilot can answer.

64 pages

An A5 booklet with hand-drawn illustrations, worked examples and a logbook to copy.

How a watch goes

Deal first. Then write it up.

  1. Deal three cards

What was out there, what came of it, and a question for you. The watch is already over. The cards are what happened.

  2. Say what you did

Watched, approached, helped, took or left. You are writing in hindsight, so you already know how it came out.

  3. Close the log

Answer the last card in the present tense, record what it cost, and sign off with the same few words every time.

  4. Follow your calling

Every Ace moves a longer story forward: a signal you are tracing, a debt, someone missing. The fourth Ace ends it.

From the log of the Tern · three cards, one entry

What an entry sounds like

Log of the Tern. Day 212. Two days out from Venn Deep. Written for Ines.

Picked up a music station on the second watch. No ident, no schedule, only dance tunes older than the ship. I held off the lane and hailed, which I wouldn't usually do. A man answered. He has kept the transmitter running nineteen years, he said, because the old survey lines were drawn by ear, station to station, and half my charts are those lines copied forward.

It is late and the set is still playing. I used to think distance was a number. Tonight it is how long a tune takes to reach nobody.

Still flying.

The book follows one pilot's log from start to finish, so every rule comes with an entry showing how it reads on the page.

Questions

What do I need to play?

The book, a standard 52-card deck with both jokers, and a notebook. One optional chapter also uses a twenty-sided die.

How long does it take?

A short entry takes ten minutes. A full watch takes about half an hour. A deck lasts roughly eighteen entries, and you can stop after any of them.

Is there combat?

Only if you want it. The main game is quiet. The optional Close Calls chapter adds dice for dangerous moments, and your pilot always survives to write the entry.

Is it bleak?

It is a game about solitude, not despair. Any card can be redrawn or ignored, and the book says so on the first page.

Can I print the PDF myself?

Yes. The booklet files are laid out for double-sided A4 printing, folded in half, with a separate wrap-around cover.

Do I need to know role-playing games?

No. If you can shuffle a deck and write a paragraph, you can play. The first chapter walks you through your first entry.
